What to Expect

Psychological counselling does not have to be a long-term commitment. Maria is a firm believer in teaching practical strategies that you can utilise from the first session. The number and frequency of sessions required depends on your needs and can vary from one session to more intensive sessions for complex and dual diagnoses.

“Seeing a psychologist is a varied personal experience depending on your circumstances, expectations, and the rapport with your psychologist. Some people find it a relief to ‘let it all out’ while others can feel drained by the end of the first session” - Maria

Your initial assessment session will include:

  1. Discussion of confidentiality and privacy

  2. Psychometric questionnaires tailored to your personal circumstances

  3. Discussion of your past and current situation (e.g., relationships, study/work, mental health symptoms, coping strategies)

  4. Establishment of goals for psychological counselling and development of a treatment plan

What do I need to bring to my first session?

What to bring depends on how your session is being funded and what you would like from seeing a psychologist. We will contact you to discuss your needs and advise you on what you will need to bring to your first session.

As a general rule, you can bring:

  •  Medicare card

  • A referral (e.g., Mental Health Care Plan from your General Practitioner)

  • Relevant reports, documents, or letters (e.g., from a psychologist, psychiatrist, school, lawyer, or court)

Most importantly, bring an open mind to therapy and your psychologist will guide you through the rest.
